I almost drove off the road when I saw the wee "Open" sign in the window!

This is a "soft" open as Joy and her husband Jotham are getting supplies in and shelving built. Joy is expecting their first child in March!

And while some things are on back order, Joy still has many lovely things in the shop and the layout is very nice:

In addition to being a crocheter, Joy also does lace tatting:

Joy said that she and Jotham plan to grow old with the shop, they're not looking to go anywhere else in the community. Great news for our area!

Guess Who's Coming To Town?!

As excited as some of us are, it could well be Santa in disguise!

I saw this last week in Bettendorf (next to the Family Credit Union on Devils Glen Road) on December 21st:

However, no one was around in the shop and I couldn't find any information about it via the chamber of commerce or online.

This evening, our intrepid SnB reporter, Claire sent in her story:

I stopped by Knit and Knot Yarn after work tonight and talked to Joy Povich. She and her husband, Jotham, are the owners. It looks like it will be a pretty large shop. Jotham was busy building shelves and they hope to open next week. I saw some of the yarn they had - plenty of Noro and Ella Rae.

Joy said that they would be asking for suggestions for yarn, too.

Donation Knitting

Many of our knitters and crocheters donate their projects to whichever organization they have a personal connection or passion for...Amy is one of those persons. Her story:

Trisha's Noah was born prematurely on 6/4/04 and passed away on 6/5/04. She bought this yarn to make a blanket to donate in his honor to Project Linus. She didn't crochet yet and started a knit pattern but it didn't go well. She tried a few times but it was put away for years. After I started knitting, we were talking about it and I told her I'd finish it for her. I got the yarn when we met in Chicago this summer. I had trouble with the pattern as it was, so with her permission, I frogged it and began anew. This blanket will be donated to our local Project Linus chapter and is in honor of him. It's Noah's blanket.

It's been a busy past few months - let's get to the projects, but first...

In January, a gentleman contacted our group about a donation from his mother's and grandmother's estates of yarn and items:

We sincerely thanked the gentleman as many of our knitters and crocheters knit for charitable organizations, and this yarn came in as a blessing for them! The rest of the yarn went to the Bettendorf Public Library for a youth knitting program coming up at the end of March. The rest of the items that were unclaimed went to Goodwill.

Now, I think that our Lynn was the person that knitted and crocheted these lovely items, but I've been wrong before!

Carol left us in the dust with her mad knitting and sewing skills for this baby sweater:

Our Barb's been toughing out a rough year and we've not seen much of her lately. So Claire organized a knitting project for us. A blanket of squares that we all knitted and contributed, and Claire pulled them together with a border (yarn donated by Laurel).

Annual Great Destash

By the time people brought in yarn they no longer wanted in their stash, it was a significant mound of yarn goodness! There was a give-away drawing from my stash: Malabrigo, bamboo, Gong (bamboo again), silk lace weight wool (2), and the superfine alpaca and angora (which went to Jacki's daughter). And at the end of the evening, it was history...

SnB at SnP 2009

A group of us headed off to the River Bandits game on Thursday. We didn't know what the weather was going to throw at us, as storms had rolled just barely north of the Quad Cities a few hours earlier. Luckily, sunshine was out for the 7 pm game of the River Bandits vs Kane County Cougars.

There was a finishing party at my digs on the last Saturday of March - and there was a prize to be given out for the most items finished, it would go to Jill! Look at all the stuff she cranked out:

Welcome to the first day of spring, everyone!

It seemed so far off back in early January where we had that record cold snap (-20'sF air temp alone). While it's chilly, the sun is out and the plants are slowly coming back to life.

And a great way to celebrate the first day of spring, in the knitting/crocheting fashion, is to have a new baby sweater! This is the February Baby Sweater by Elizabeth Zimmerman. (The Yarn Harlot recently wrote about her sweater (Febraury Lady) that was rubbing shoulders with Elizabeth's knitted sweater.)

This February Baby Sweater above was knitted by our Jeanne, who's eagerly anticipating a visit with her children from France, who are bringing their first child and her newest grandchild to meet her!

Chicago Yarn Crawl 2008 Part 2

Once we finished up at Portillo's, it was time to hit My Sister's Knits - where Carole greeted us:

From there, we went on to Katie's family home, where Jim and Mary hosted us for a cook out:

We were quite relaxed, it was so quiet and the weather was phenomenal:

It was late in the evening after some fire poking, a bit of imbibing of wonderful apfelkorn, and fantastic desserts. So off Jeanne drove us to the hotel, to get ready for...

SUNDAY
A few of us were up early enough that we had a light breakfast at the hotel buffet. A few hours later, we packed up our goodies and loaded up the van:

We were taking bets on who was going to ride on the roof to make room for the luggage and purchases. Luckily we all fit:

Then it was off to Omega Restaurant for brunch/lunch before heading off to Knitche. (We were also able to visit the shop owned by Katie's aunt before Knitche opened.) We were so dazed by yarn fumes by the third day, Katie and I didn't take photos. Here's your obligatory Knitche photo:

The good news is that Malabrigo was scored for Linda!

Next door, Katie took us to the bead shop, Bead Heaven. Several of us ended up with beads for future projects.

After that shop, it was time to take our weary selves off to Trader Joe's for a few supplies and then we headed home.

Chicago Yarn Crawl 2008 Part 1

Jeanne picked us all up and away we went:

And while some of us rested, some of us went to the mall across the street. Then we had a Sit and Knit hosted by Jo that evening, along with dinner. Back to the hotel to get some rest for....

SATURDAY
We met up for breakfast at the hotel (a nice buffet for breakfast) and headed out for Loopy Yarns. It's now located at Dearborn Station:

Road Trip - March 16, 2008

Off we went from the Coffee Hound to Iowa City on Sunday morning. Luckily, this wasn't a morning dense with fog and mist, it made for a pleasant ride up there!

When we arrived, the directory was consulted on the Ped Mall to find the Bread Garden Market (we didn't know about this article before we arrived). We dutifully trooped off in the direction it told us, only to be greeted by huge signs in the store's windows saying that they had moved. And where to? Just about where we had started out.

Walking, walking, more walking...

We only go through the *best* alleys when we do SnB road trips.

And through the magical, mystical portal that was just big enough for us to slide through...

To reach our destination:

Where the sweet potatoes as big as your head were exclaimed over:

The food was fresh, beautiful and fantastic on their salad and hot meal buffet. Sandwiches were pre-made, but if you didn't find one to your liking you could order one at the deli counter. Lunch ran us, on average, about $8 per person. The soups are phenomenally good, as were the sandwiches!

Once we ate, it was off to the knitting shop which was written about in Ravelry - Home Ec Workshop:

This is Alisa (co-owner) who greeted us (and may have been a bit overwhelmed by our enthusiasm):

The shop has sewing materials, needlepoint supplies and yarn. In addition to the seating for knitters, crocheters, etc., there's a workshop area for sewers and for those finishing their knitted projects.

The hordes checked out the yarn immediately...

There may have been shopping involved.

Then a nice sit-down for knitting and crocheting - I was happy to be in repose!

Home Ec has a tea and coffee bar where you can also purchase cookies and other baked sweets.

It was a wonderful afternoon made even better when the usual knitting group (that calls Home Ec, well...home) arrived. Thank you so much ladies for allowing us to camp out in your space and share your knitting time!

And thanks to Home Ec for hosting us. We'll be back in the near future! By the way, this is Lauren who told us quite a bit about the shop when Alisa was busy. She's modeling the sweater vest that she created (along with the pattern) for us:
